Cookie Thoughts

We went to a Chinese buffet for Mom's birthday.  After the five of us stuffed ourselves silly, we cracked open our fortune cookies.

Interesting reading....

1. My father got this:  I would rather attempt something great and fail than attempt to do nothing and succeed.

First of all, is this a fortune?   I'm not sure.  However, the first part seems true.  The second part seems goofy.

2.  Our daughter opened this one:  Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

We all went "whoooaaaa" because our daughter has been in transition this past year.  She moved back home when a chosen path she'd invested three years in did not work out.   It's not the kind of experience she wanted, but by the love of God, she's plowed her way through and is beginning to see a pretty good Plan B.

3.  My husband got this: Good luck is often with the man who doesn't include it in his plans.

Again, not a fortune.  But, good advice.  This was appropriate for my husband, who works very hard in management and often has to resolve all kinds of diddly-do with customers.  If good luck comes his way, he's happy, but he doesn't expect it.  People are just too squirrelly.

4.  This was mine:  Wait for it.  There will be a big change today.

Hmmm.  Kind of a fortune.  I waited all day.  The only thing I could come up with was that tropical storm Debby had moved on, and I was able to hang clothes on the line.  After a week of rain, this was a nice change, so I'll take it.  I would have preferred to have won the lottery, but I guess experience is what you get when you don't get what you want.

5.  Mom, who's 92, opened her cookie and giggled.  Then she read: There's a good chance of a romantic encounter soon.

Now, that's a fortune.

p.s. have you ever received a good "fortune" in your cookie?

Great post, Mare! I love reading the fortunes, they rarely make sense but they're always fun.

They don't seem like the fortunes of old anymore, but we always open them and get a giggle. :)

I might be considered a kill-joy but I never read those paper fortunes. I just pull out the paper, chomp the cookie down and consider the yummy, not so sweet cookie, my good fortune. hahahaha.

We always end our fortune saying with "in bed". Makes it a lot funnier. Especially for your mom's! That would be quite the birthday present. Here's hoping your mom's fortune comes true!

My ex husband and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner at a Chinese restaurant. His fortune read...

"You and your wife will live a long happy life together."

We are divorced, and he is dead.

So I guess the answer to your question is no. :)

Funny post. My brother recently received a fortune cookie with a rather mean fortune. Perhaps something was lost in translation or maybe there is just some fortune writer who has become disgruntled and bitter. Either way it made me laugh.

Thanks for your kind words and your follow on my blog. I look forward to reading more from you.

I liked your mom's, cute! I remember once when I was very young and going through some tough times, I got a fortune cookie with no fortune in it. I almost cried, lol!

Great post! I enjoyed reading all the fortunes. I really like the ones that are more like great quotes or words of wisdom. I used to save those and glue them in a journal.

And happy late birthday to your mom.

Yep, and it's still hanging on my bulletin board: "You have a charming way with words and should write a book." Funniest fortune was one our daughter got years ago. It said something about how, someday, she would move the earth. She wanted to know what that meant, and her oh-so-helpful brothers told her she was gonna be fat.

That was a great post! Yes, I read fortune cookies, just for the fun of it. Most of them just make me chuckle.

This post made me giggle.
None of my fortunes stand out in my memory, so I guess I haven't received any good ones.

I had a fortune in a bottle cap once that read:

"Find out about bugs".

It felt more like an instruction than a fortune.
Thank you for your fantastic post, you have a lovely and well-designed blog.
