Walmart

Walmart gets a bad rap sometimes.  There are online videos of people shopping in their underwear and curlers.  Ripped Spandex and pink hair.  Kids whining and generally out of control.  I resist going to Walmart because our Super store is too big.  I wander around and get lost and forget what I came in for.  I always end up buying more than I'd planned.  I lose track of time.  I have to be wide awake and on a mission.

The other day, however, something very nice happened there.

After standing in line awhile, I paid for my River Rocks, which were about ten bucks.  The debit receipt rang up eighty bucks.  I looked at the cashier and said, "I thought the River Rocks were only ten dollars.  My receipt says eighty."

The cashier looked genuinely confused.  The customer behind me spoke to the cashier.  "Did you ring up my purchases with hers?"

I addressed him.  "Did you buy seventy bucks worth of stuff?"

He nodded.  He was tall and wore a Howard University t-shirt.  "That sounds about right."

We both looked at the cashier.  She said, "I'm sorry.  I'm going to have to get a manager.  I'll have to void this and then re-ring both of you."

Neither me nor Mr. Howard U. wanted to wait any longer.  He pulled his wallet from his pocket and addressed me.  "Tell you what.  How about I give you seventy dollars.  Make it seventy-one for tax, and we call it even."  He extended the cash to me.

I was a bit stunned.  One, because I didn't think people carried cash anymore.  Two, a stranger was giving me money.  Stuff like this doesn't happen to me.  I spoke to the cashier, "Don't you have to straighten this out in the register?"

She shook her head.  "If you two can work it out, it's fine with me."

I thought fast.  The guy's money looked legit.  I'd just never been offered cash in Walmart before.

I took the money.  "OK.  Thanks."

He smiled.  "No problem."  He surveyed the bags for his purchases, pulled a bag of rocks from one of his sacks and handed it to me.  "Enjoy your rocks."  He hurried out while I stood there, still wondering what just happened.

With all the red tape businesses have to create to solve problems these days, this friendly customer-to-customer transaction seemed almost illegal.  But, it was a smart solution to a mistake probably every cashier has made at some point.

We need people like Mr. Howard U. in Washington, don't you think?

It sure was a simple solution to what could have been a time consuming one. Yes, there are people that still deal in cash. I'm one of them.

That just makes me smile! I don't mind going to wal-mart, but it's not my first choice since further from me than a few other options. And by the way, there may be more unkempt-dressed people and more screaming kids because there are just more people in walmart than most places! :)

Great story. I try to do things like that when I have the opportunity...doesn't happen very often, but it's nice to surprise people with kindness.

And about the spending more? Always. We always joke that $50 is the magic number at Walmart. Doesn't matter what I go in for it costs at least that much to escape!

Sounds like a good way to get the matter fixed and save you guys time. We do need more people like you and him in Washington to see the problem, work out a solution and move on.

We go to Wal-Mart weekly for grocery shopping. I have a list and pretty much stick to it. I'm not one that likes to shop any way so I just want in and out of whatever store as quickly as possible :)

Wow! I would have been feeling exactly like you. That was cool of him. I can't remember where Walmart was on my Orange Park part of town but I know I'd go to San Jose? because it was nicer. I rarely did that though unless we were "looking all over town" for something. I didn't grocery shop there. Here I'm in WAlmart severAl times a week. It's less than two miles away.

Yes we really do! People are just often too caught up in what they are doing too to not even notice what is going on around them. And yea-- who carries cash? :)

Have you checked the money to make sure it's legit? Just kidding. That was a nice thing to have happen. I bet the cashier was very relieved that neither one of you chewed her out.

Yeah it is great that he was willing to do that keep a simple mistake simple instead of insisting on a long and complicated solution.

Way to go to keep simple things simple...lovely post.

What a great solution! But isn't it sad that we automatically think it's some sort of scam?

If that cashier blogs in her free time, you just KNOW what her post was about today. LOL!

Isn't it funny how simple solutions are practically unheard of nowadays? Glad you guys saved time & added hassle - maybe you should run for Congress?

Wow! That's a pretty amazing story. There are still good, kind, and decent people in this world. That fact gives me hope for us all. :)

Very interesting solution. It gives me hope that are indeed intelligent people still left in this country, and shopping at Wal Mart no less!
